March 19, 2019 @ COSTI Immigrant Services
The Education Resources Action Group and COSTI Immigrant Services co-hosted an Education Fair at COSTI’s Keele Street location on March 19, 2019. The fair included an information marketplace where fifteen different service providers, including colleges, universities, Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), shared their programs and services related to education. Newcomer attendees included English language students who were looking to connect to programs and services that would help them upgrade their skills and pursue their education goals. They were able to access a wide variety of information about admission requirements, academic upgrading, vocational and skills training, certificate and diploma programs as well as funding options.
Two workshops were offered at the fair for frontline workers. The aim was to build the capacity of service providers in helping their newcomer clients – students and internationally trained professionals – access post-secondary education. The Council of Educators of Toronto (CET) spoke about their work/ website that connects learners to programs and supports to facilitate transition to post-secondary school. The TWLIP Education Resources Action Group presented on their Welcome2School website that helps service providers navigate the education system with newcomer clients. The second workshop was delivered by Windmill Microlending who offer financial aid to those wanting to restart their careers in Canada.
Lots of refreshments were on hand, courtesy of Humber College. The Education Resources Action Group thanks all who were involved in this successful event!
